Inside Information Mother to Mother

By Dorothy Okung, Educational Coordinator, Professional Football Players Mothers Association

The Professional Football Players Mothers Association (PFPMA) has completed their 19th Pre-season Conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana.  During the conference we had a chance to give back to the community through our food drive. PFPMA partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans and the drive was hosted at Winn Dixie on Belle Chasse Hwy in Gretna, Louisiana. The charity event was an absolute success!  It exceeded all our expectations!

During the weekend festivities we got a chance to meet and bond with each other. The new incoming football moms and the veteran moms realized how much we had in common!   The new moms had similar questions, as I did, on how to make the transition into becoming a mom of an NFL player.

Question – What happens on game day? How do we get our tickets on game day, and how can I get a jersey?  I have walked in those shoes!  Transitioning into the NFL is where PFPMA fits in.  The organization serves as a mentoring and support system for the new incoming moms.  Our vision is: “The Professional Football Players Mothers Association is to be a support system for the mothers of professional football players and to serve, support and strengthen our communities through charitable giving.”  Our mission is: “Transforming lives through serving supporting and strengthening our communities.”

Getting drafted into the NFL for all parents is a dream come true. It is to your advantage to get all available knowledge of the environment and what it entails. Because of our experiences most of these questions can be better answered by those mothers who have walked a mile in the shoes the new moms are about to put on.

It is helpful that during first game you look for a veteran mom who can answer your questions and help you to have a wonderful experience during your son’s NFL career.  Veteran parents often know all the great places to eat after the games, tips on the best hotels for the away games, where to meet your son after the game and contacts when visiting out of town.

The season is almost here and the excitement of a brand new season is in the air! I cannot stress enough how important it is to just relax and enjoy the experience!

Meeting new parents and forming relationships that will last a lifetime is fun and rewarding!

Remember that behind every football player on the field, there is an amazing woman or man, with unconditional love, a jersey-wearing prayer warrior, his rock screaming in the stands. We are all so very blessed to be a part of the NFL family, enjoy and see you in the stands!
