Season May Have Just Begun, But Think About Offseason Now

Time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s remarkable to realize that this football season is already about half over.

But even though you are out excelling between the white lines, now is also the time to be taking action on how you will excel during the offseason, which can be among the first steps you take to excelling in life after football.

Just a few weeks ago on our NFL Engagement Zone, we opened the registration process for our season at NFLPE, the Career Development Program which begins in February with four-day career programs and Boot Camps, and also includes job shadows and internships.

This got me to thinking about our headline story in last month’s LIFE Update featuring Jack Brewer, one of our true trailblazers who took our first-ever Business Management & Entrepreneurial Program (BM&E) offered at Harvard.

That step started Jack down a post-football career path that took him to where he is today –CEO of The Brewer Group and founder of The Jack Brewer Foundation.

But he remembers where it all began.

“Taking these (NFLPE) courses opened up a whole new world for me, and taught me not to ask what the League is doing for me, but rather to ask what I am doing for myself. There is no other industry in America that gives you a head-start on your next career like the NFL.”

A powerful perspective from a man who founded a global advisory firm that offers financial management, corporate advisory, and sports and entertainment services, as well as a highly successful corporate social responsibility initiative.

No surprise, since the University of Minnesota Masters degree graduate was a quick study who learned early what the NFL offered him, and followed his Harvard BM&E by attending our sister program at Wharton, in addition to participating in other NFLPE programs as well.

“I want to inspire other former players to understand the magnitude of what you have access to with the Shield, even to me as a special teams player who was not a superstar,” said Brewer, a natural leader elected captain of three NFL teams. “Thanks to the NFL, I can walk in a lot of doors that may not be as open to others since people want to be around NFL players.”

These same doors remain open for you, and the walk-through begins with our programs.

“I run my own company today as CEO thanks in large part to taking the NFLPE courses available to me,” Brewer remarked. “I wanted a brighter future for myself after football.”
