Wharton Executive Education
The Wharton School’s Aresty Institute of Executive Education is pleased to announce the third annual running of the Athlete Development Professional Certificate Program. The program will be held on Wharton’s campus in Philadelphia, May 30 – June 2, 2014.
This program is designed through collaboration between Wharton faculty and NFL leaders whose goal is to deliver a premier educational experience for today’s sports industry professional. Wharton and the NFL recognize the broad range of professional experience, job responsibilities, management , leadership and business acumen that today’s Athlete Engagement Director is challenged to bring to their role. To address these challenges and capitalize on the diversity of experience in the classroom, Wharton and the NFL created the Athlete Engagement Certification Program.
The curriculum addresses essential management and leadership development topics as: Critical Thinking and Decision Making, Communications, Motivation and Engagement, Relationship Management, Negotiation, Influence and Persuasion. To complete the learning journey, participants will work on Action Learning Projects. These projects will allow participants a chance to utilize their classroom discussions and professional skills in “real time” on a specific goal related to either their professional or personal development. They will also enhance the traditional classroom lectures to facilitate peer-to-peer networking and an opportunity to learn from each other’s diverse range of experiences.
The program has run since 2012 with Faculty Director Dr. Kenneth Shropshire, who also heads the Wharton Sports Business Initiative, and Learning Director Mario Moussa. The NFL was the first group to sponsor 35 of their Club Directors of Player Engagement to attend and complete this premier program at Wharton Executive Education. Since then, participants came from a variety of sports backgrounds, including the National Football League, World Wrestling Entertainment, and collegiate sports management to attend this uniquely designed program that focused on equipping them with the skills needed to handle the complex challenges of managing players while also providing value to their respective teams, leagues, and organizations.
