Philadelphia, PA- On Saturday, October 27th over 140 Jefferson Awards Student Leaders from the City of Philadelphia will attend the 2nd annual Students in Action Leadership Conference being held at Peirce College in Center City. 15 Students in Action high school leadership teams from both the School District of Philadelphia and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will come together for a day of skill building and leadership training. The students attending make up the Student in Action leadership teams in their respective schools. The goal of the Students in Action leadership conference is to challenge the student leaders to their limits and develop leadership, communication and problem solving skills while building cross-cultural bonds and preparing them for active, contributing roles in their communities.

The morning session will kick off with Keynote Speaker Ike Reese, former Philadelphia Eagle and Philadelphia Sports Radio Talk Show host. Ike will talk to the students about the importance of staying in school, volunteering and giving back to their city and communities. Then the students will participate in a series of workshops aimed to assist them in leading an action oriented volunteer service culture in their high school during the school year. The presentations at this year’s conference are designed and facilitated by two Jefferson Award’s Community Partners, City Year Philadelphia and LaSalle University along with two student facilitated workshops from the Student Leader Union and the Jefferson Awards teams from Conwell-Egan Catholic High School and Salesianum School. There will also be a “hands on” service project that the students will participate in with City Year. The Student Leaders will end the day with a raffle of locally donated prizes such as an autographed NFL football from Ike Reese and dinner for two students and a parent with the VP of Player Engagement for the NFL, Troy Vincent, a former Philadelphia Eagle, soon to be inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame.

About the Jefferson Awards

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard to create a Nobel Prize for public service in America. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to engage volunteers by providing training, measuring impact and honoring their accomplishments.

The Students in Action (SIA) was created in partnership with Deloitte with the aggressive goal of increasing volunteerism in America’s high schools and to pass the tradition of service on to the next generation. The strategy is to create Jefferson Awards youth leadership teams in each high school that celebrate great volunteers, inspire others to get involved and help raise additional resources to expand volunteer activities in the areas of need. Students in Action is currently operating in over 325 high schools nationwide and in 13 regions: Chicago, Delaware, Central Florida, Indianapolis, Memphis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Bay Area, Savannah, South Carolina and Toledo.
