The Importance of Giving Back

There is nothing like the holiday season to remind you that there are people around you who desperately need assistance. With all the gift giving that the season is centered around, it is not difficult to find a worthy cause. There are many charitable foundations and organizations that would make a difference with your monetary gift. There are also food banks, warming centers, and many others that need specific items donated. All of these are worthy causes.

My family and I had the privilege of being involved in a “Love Project” for those less fortunate in our own community. With a goal of collecting 500 bags full of food, we set out to make a difference. The kids worked hard soliciting food from everyone they knew. They handed out flyers to all their teammates, friends, and neighbors. It was truly a labor of love. The project was a success because of the generosity of so many people. Some contributed a truckload of food, while others gave a couple of cans. But together, we made a difference. One of the most valuable moments of the project was handing the food out. We went to two different neighborhoods and personally handed the food over. Looking into the eyes of those in your own community who are struggling without the basic necessities of life will stir up something inside of you. We went home thinking about those families and felt inspired to do more.

Often times, giving your time can prove to be just as valuable as giving monetarily. During the holiday season, it has become normal in our society to be busy. It is acceptable. We rush from here to there and back again. We don’t slow down for anything or anyone. But how can we make a difference if we do not know the needs? How can we know where the needs are if we do not take the time to listen? As this year comes to an end, may we all slow down a bit and give our time to make a difference in someone else’s life.
